OMHOF to host Russian Folk artist Tetiana Khomenko
Muskogee, Okla. – The Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame will host Russian Folk musician, Tetiana Khomenko, on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 7 pm at the Frisco Depot, 401 S. 3rd in Muskogee.
The balalaika is the national folk instrument of Russia.
Our soloist, Tetiana (Tanya) Khomenko has been playing balalaika for 22 years, ever since her first music teacher, from Kyiv music school #14, came to her classroom and asked “Who wants to play the balalaika?” Tetiana is a graduate of the Glière Institute of Music, and earned a master’s degree at the P. I. Tchaikovsky National Music Academy, studying under the Honored Artist of Ukraine Professor Yuri Aleksyk. Her master’s thesis dealt with the problems of stress in music and ways to overcome it as a balalaika player.
Tetiana studied conducting at the Institute, crediting gifted instructors for the skills that allowed her to conduct and perform world masterpieces. In addition to her solo performances with orchestra Tetiana loves her quartet Bravo Band, which she calls the “Hipsters of Folk Music.” Performing music from the Renaissance to the present day, the group appears regularly at concerts and festivals, and in June 2013 won the International competition “Samorodki”.
Tetiana attended her first Balalaika and Domra Association of America national convention in 2014 and won the respect and admiration of its members, returning in 2015 and 2016 as head of the balalaika faculty. In this, her first United States tour, she is accompanied by concert pianist Vitalii Lyman, with a travel itinerary including University of Indiana, University of Wisconsin, William and Mary College, the Lyceum in Alexandria, VA and other venues in Williamsburg, Tahlequah, Muskogee, Tucson and Patagonia, Arizona.
